Once a year, Netwerk treats their female networkers to an evening that isn’t about work. A Ladies Night. I was invited along with my camera.
Upon entering their Antwerp headquarters, bubbles were waiting, and there was plenty to do throughout the evening. Ceramic painting, a chair massage, a hand and foot treatment, a small clothing market. Plenty of reasons to stick around and catch up.
Besides capturing the atmosphere, there was some extra work for me, and it was exactly what I love doing most. One of the activities was having your portrait taken. It sounds simple, but almost everyone joined the queue with the same sentence: I never look good in photos. That’s where it starts for me.
I give some directions and often demonstrate how they can stand. The rest is just talking and making them feel at ease, until their shoulders drop and the camera is forgotten for a moment. That way, you don’t get a stiff passport photo, but a portrait where someone truly recognizes themselves. Most of them looked at the screen afterwards with a satisfied smile.
And for the rest of the evening, there was a lot of laughter and catching up.
